Masjid Hamza is located on
Stewart Avenue in Valley Stream. The masjid was recently
rebuilt in 2006 due to a growing Muslim community. Surrounding
the masjid are several rows of beautiful flowers that really
makes the place look lively and fresh. The front of the masjid
had two big wooden doors. These two doors are usually closed
and only opened on Fridays for Jummah Prayers. The front is all
white bricks with a line of green bricks. The masjid from the
front looks beautiful with a small garden full of flowers. The
front is also surrounded by a metal gate which makes the
building look grand. The building is three stories high and has
three green lines going across. The back is where everyone
usually enters for daily prayers.
There is a
parking lot in the back that fits about twenty cars. The back
is surrounded by a white fence. There are two different
entrances, one for woman and one for men. The masjid is located
in a residential area. Before it was rebuilt, the masjid was
just an ordinary house. It’s surrounded by several houses and
sticks out like sore thumb.
I went for
Maghrib prayers, and saw several kids in the back parking lot
playing basketball and just running around. There were several
people entering the masjid for night prayers. Inside the masjid
you are required to take off your shoes. The second you enter
you can smell a nice scent throughout the place. The main hall
is pretty large with carpet all around. The carpet is in rows
so that people can line up in prayer easily. The colors of the
carpet are blue and green and the whole masjid inside is white.
Around the first floor there are several book shelves fool of
Qurans in Arabic and English. There are also several books on
hadith and the life of the prophet. Also around the first floor
there were a lot of Islamic calligraphy posters. They have
Arabic writings all across the entrance and where the imam leads
prayer.
There is also
several class rooms located on the first floor. The masjid has
programs for all ages for learning how to read the Quran to
learning the life of the prophet Muhammad. These classrooms all
have more Arabic writings on the wall from students from Hamza
School. When you first walk in from the entrance there is a
huge bulletin board with all special programs going on during
the month. You can check out the prayer timings and other forms
of information such as educational classes.
Scattered
throughout the masjid there are a lot of donation boxes. There
are donation boxes for a masjid construction and sadaqah. After
the night prayer there were a lot of people who donated towards
sadaqah and masjid construction. There were posters of new
construction updates around the first floor. The masjid has
plans to expand the 2nd floor so they are looking for
donations.
After Maghrib
prayer someone came up and made announcements about construction
and classes going on during the weekend. Downstairs there is a
library and computer lab. All the books in the library were
behind casing so I wasn’t able to take out the books. The
computer lab was closed when I went to I wasn’t able to see that
either.
The bathrooms
were really large downstairs. They had special areas to make
ablution. They had 5 or 6 sinks dedicated for wudu. Before the
prayer, they called the adhan to notify people that the salah is
about to begin.
Outside above
the masjid, there is a big green dome, with a pointy surface
sticking out. At night the Dome has windows with green lights
shining from the inside. From the outside the masjid looks
really nice at night. The community is really important in the
function of this masjid. |
